IN3: ICSO Research Assistant (predoc)


The UOC is an innovative university, rooted in Catalonia and open to the world. The UOC's mission is to train people throughout their lives and contribute to their progress and that of society.

The selected person will join as a Research Assistant in training (predoc) of the Internet Computing&Systems Optimization (ICSO) research group at the IN3 of the University, an interdisciplinary team made up of 8 doctoral students and 6 senior researchers with a solid training in indexed publications and leadership of competitive projects, that focuses on two interconnected lines of research:

- The use of algorithms and software solutions to support complex decision-making in the areas of transport and logistics, production, real-time positioning and smart cities.
- The development of distributed and parallel computer systems at different scales (small groups, clusters or Internet), as well as the design of collaborative systems and applications.

In the context of the HAROSA International Network, since 2009, senior members of the ICSO have been collaborated with researchers from other universities and research centers around the world in the development of computational intelligence solutions that enable our industrial partners significantly increase their levels of efficiency and competitiveness.


- Develop high quality research in cooperation with our international partners in Europe and North and South America, carrying out various ongoing projects and taking on new ones.
- Provide methodological and analytical support (knowledge transfer) to companies in different sectors, so that they can increase their competitiveness in today's global economy.
- To train a new generation of ORA/CS researchers capable of dealing with the complexity of IT systems in the Internet age and to contribute to making them more efficient and sustainable.

With direct dependence on the Principal Investigator of the project, the following tasks must be performed:
- To complete a doctorate in networks and information technologies (Operational Research/Computer Science/Artificial Intelligence) in the consolidated research group ICSO @ IN3 under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ángel A. Juan
- To participate, as a researcher, in the different R&D projects (including scientific articles and transfer projects to industry) that the ICSO @ IN3 group is currently developing
- To support the ICSO @ IN3 research group in new applications of R&D projects

What we are looking for:

- Engineering
- Master in Mathematics, Computer Science, Industrial Engineering, Statistics, Data Science, Computer Finance, Transport and Logistics
- Excellent transcript of BSc and MSc notes
- Minimum English B2
- Computer skills: Python, R and/or Java
- Passion for research and scientific publications

There will be a 3-year full-time contract (38.5 hours/week) with a forecast of incorporation on January 3rd, 2022.

The allocation of the 2 places will be subject to the existence of a sufficient budget.

The workplace is located at the UOC headquarters in Poblenou, Barcelona (District 22@), with agreed teleworking.
